Dr. Bruce S. Pomerantz
Education
I am a licensed psychologist in Bethesda/Chevy Chase, Maryland. I earned a B.A. in Psychology from Pomona College in 1982 and a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology from the Virginia Consortium for Professional Psychology in 1986. At that time, VCPP consisted of the College of William and Mary, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk State University, and Old Dominion University. I was a full-time student at all four institutions concurrently. I subsequently completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at the Pain Control and Rehabilitation Institute of Georgia, Inc. outside Atlanta in 1989. There I taught patients how to reduce and live with their chronic physical pain.
Clinical Practice
Since my move to the Washington, DC metropolitan area in 1989, my private practice has focused primarily on helping teenagers and young adults and their families solve a variety of problems. Many of the issues I address are related to difficulty coping with school: academic underachievement, attention deficits and learning challenges, performance and social anxiety, phobias, school avoidance and truancy, and victimization by bullies. I treat many students for depression who may also engage in self-injurious behavior and/or use or abuse of recreational drugs and alcohol. I help teenagers who relate negatively to their parents and other authority, as well as those who have poor control over their anger. I work also with adolescents who are challenged by medical illness.
An overarching aim of my practice is to teach parents how to promote their teenagers’ independence. I collaborate with them on regaining their authority in the home and learning to discipline and relate to their children more effectively. I help parents cope with the challenges of separation and divorce, including managing their children’s emotional needs.
